The Tobacco-Related Disease Research Program (TRDRP) of California administers the portion of state retail taxes on tobacco products that are designated for research within California. This unique source of funding supports investigators at eligible California institutions whose research contributes directly to the elimination of smoking and the use of tobacco products and mitigates the human and economic costs of tobacco product use in California.
Under the 2019 call for applications, TRDRP awarded over $57 million dollars to 28 institutions across California.
Changes and Key Requirements for the 2020 Call
- TRDRP will only have one grant cycle for the 2019-2020 fiscal year. See Key Dates for important deadlines.
- All applications received for the 2020 Call must clearly address tobacco or tobacco-related disease. A focus on the biological effects of nicotine and flavorants is particularly encouraged.
- Applicants are required to determine whether the sex of an animal model or human subject should be considered as a biological variable when designing their experiments.
- Applications for the “Research Award” award type must focus on tobacco-related health disparities or research on new and emerging tobacco products.
- Two new award types have been added: Rapid Response Research to Accelerate Policy, and Community-Partnered Participatory Research Award. Applicant teams are required to review and respond to a separate RFA for these grant types that will be available in late October 2019.
- Submission of a letter of intent (LOI) is required, including for resubmitted applications, except for the Rapid Response Research to Accelerate Policy Award and the Community-Partnered Participatory Research Award.
