INTRODUCTION

The UCLA Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research (OVCR) is pleased to announce two Calls for Proposals for Transdisciplinary Seed Grants to further the development of new collaborative research and scholarship across the UCLA campus.  The purpose of these grants is to catalyze new lines of research and new interdisciplinary collaborations with the potential for solving important and challenging problems that can have profound benefits for society.

In FY17, proposals are solicited in two funding tracks: Big Data TSG, and Open TSG. Please see the subheadings below for more information about each track.

FUNDING AMOUNT: Up to $40,000 in funding for one year.

DEADLINE: Deadlines for the TSG grant proposals is Wednesday, February 15, 2017 at 11:59 pm, PST but teams may request an extension to submit their proposals up until Tuesday, February 21 at noon.  Requests for extensions should be submitted to ovcr@conet.ucla.edu and be accompanied with the subject matter of the proposal and the anticipated collaborators.

BIG DATA TSG

Big Data TSG are intended to further the development of new transdisciplinary research and scholarship across the UCLA campus, with an emphasis on research relevant to the field commonly referred to as “Big Data”.  Research in the Big Data arena involves the generation, analysis, use, and application of very large and complex datasets, requiring new and/or non-traditional tools for data collection, storage, curation, analysis, transfer, visualization, querying, and protection.  Big Data capabilities are having an extraordinary impact on research activities worldwide, in fields as diverse as social sciences, arts and architecture, physical sciences, health sciences, and engineering. This funding opportunity is open to any proposed project that meets the criteria listed in the Big Data TSG Call for Proposals. Applications must be submitted online through the Big Data TSG Application Portal.

BIG DATA RESOURCES AND REPOSITORIES - In addition to seed funding, the OVCR will make available a list of datasets and sample data-analysis needs originating from different campus units to facilitate matching as well to inspire creative and relevant research projects. BIG DATA TSG NETWORKING EVENT JANUARY 18, 2017, 4PM - 6PM - Those interested in submitting a proposal to the Big Data TSG grant program may wish to attend this Big Data-themed Networking event  to meet potential collaborators and to learn more about campus resources related to Big Data. Please RSVP.  (Note: this is one of two events on January 18 related to fostering Big Data-related research and collaboration at UCLA. Interested parties are also encouraged to attend this presentation from NVIDIA  about GPU Deep Learning on the same day.)

TSG COLLABORATOR DATABASE - To help  facilitate the identification of potential collaborators for TSG projects, the OVCR has initiated a database for faculty members to specify their research interests and to search other listings to find potential collaborators. Please enter your information through the TSG Collaborator DatabaseOn your first visit you will need to first “register” or “enroll” using your UCLA logon id.  On subsequent visits you will just need to login.

OPEN TSG

The Open TSG funding mechanism is intended to further the development of new transdisciplinary research and scholarship across the UCLA campus, with a requirement that projects are led by a UCLA Academic Senate faculty member from a "North Campus" discipline.  The purpose of these grants is to catalyze new lines of research and new interdisciplinary collaborations with the potential for solving important and challenging problems that can have profound benefits for society. This funding opportunity is open to any proposed project that meets the criteria listed in the Open TSG Call for Proposals. Applications must be submitted online through the Open TSG Application Portal.
