Guidance on Data Protection with ChatGPT and Generative AI

On July 31, 2023, Interim Chief Information Security Officer Drake Chang advised faculty and staff to take precaution when sharing UCLA data with ChatGPT and other generative AI tools. A table was included in the announcement with examples of permitted and prohibited information allowed to share with these applications. A comprehensive list of data types that should not be shared with ChatGPT can be found in the Protection Level 3 or 4 (PDF).

Currently, there is a discussion between UCLA and Open AI of a paid ChatGPT Plus subscription. Although this version will offer better protection, it will not enable sharing sensitive data. Updates about this negotiation and or/agreements will be released in the Fall.

Chang warned of fake websites attempting to mask as popular AI apps. This article shares how to tell ChatGPT scams apart from the real ChatGPT website.
