UCLA Acquires Westside Pavilion to Create State-of-the-Art Research Park

On January 3, 2024, Chancellor Gene Block announced UCLA’s acquisition of the former Westside Pavilion Mall. The 700,000 square foot property will be reshaped into the UCLA Research Park.

The plan is to remake this empty former mall into a state-of-the-art research and innovation hub. The space also includes a 12-screen multiplex movie theater that may be converted into lecture halls or performance spaces.

Many people were involved in the acquisition and creating the initial plans for the space, including Vice Chancellor for UCLA Health Sciences and CEO Dr. John Mazziotta, Vice Chancellor for Research and Creative Activities Roger Wakimoto, and Interim Vice Chancellor and Chief Financial Officer Allison Baird-James.

The acquisition of the former mall will be transformative for the institution, Southern California, and beyond.
