The Iris Cantor - UCLA Women's Health Research Center (WHERC) has partnered with Solve M.E./CFS Initiative to offer Myalgic Encephalitis (ME)/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS)-specific funding through their Annual Health Pilot Program. Pilot funding is available for research related to the etiology or treatment of ME, also known as chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). ME/CFS is a disease characterized by:
- Profound fatigue
- Cognitive dysfunction
- Sleep abnormalities
- Autonomic manifestations
- Chronic pain
WHERC invites submission of projects for pilot funding addressing the following issues:
- To encourage and support research, including interdisciplinary research, in the field of ME/CFS, including, but not limited to:
- Basic science research on the etiologies of ME/CFS
- Identifying new targets for prevention or treatment of ME/CFS
- To train researchers capable of leading and conducting ME/CFS research programs
- To extend resources to increase the quality of ME/CFS throughout UCLA and affiliated institutions
Pilots may include basic or clinical/translational studies. Successful applicants may be asked to attend a team science training.
Award Amount and Details
Investigators may request up $45,000 for a one year period.

Pilot Submission Timeline and Selection Process
- Submission deadline: Monday, April 27, 2020 by noon
- Submit a one-page letter of intent and NIH biosketch by e-mail for review (see program's RFA for contact information).
- The letter should indicate/include:
- Abstract of planned pilot research project
- Long range research goals for this pilot work for future research
- Whether the research is a new or augmented pilot research project
- For any augmentation requests, how additional funds will strengthen current research and specify how increased budget amount would be used in your pilot work
- Budget amount requested
- NIH biosketch(s) of investigators (attachments)
- The Review Committee will review letters of intent and contact investigators whom they wish to submit full pilot proposals by Monday, May 4th, 2020.
- Funded projects will begin July 1, 2020.
- Note: Successful applicants may be asked to attend a team science training.
Eligibility Information
These funding opportunities are available to UCLA researchers, including all researchers at the UCLA Westwood and Santa Monica Campuses in DGSOM and UCLA College, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, LA BioMed at Harbor-UCLA and Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science.
